Petunia - September 2011

Well, I guess all stories start as Once upon time...but since this isn't just any ol' story we are going to be different then normal and start with:

4 volunteers, 3 days, 2 lives, 1 priceless story!!

Saturday, September 3, a volunteer was looking at dogs needing to be pulled from shelters. She ran across a beagle mix named Petunia, who was possibly pregnant, and needing to be saved by Tuesday, September 6. She was listed on a facebook page called MiddleMutts, which post dogs needing to be pulled.
After 3 of the volunteers talked about it, they decided to see if HART could pull her from the shelter. After talking with Amy (HART's owner) she agreed, and told us to write to get more information on her. So we did. I know, you know where this story is going, what you don't know is the amazing people behind it, and all the events that took place.
We wrote MiddleMutts and was able to email with Kerri. She helped us with the information we needed and we tried to assure her if we took her, we'd do whatever we could to give her the right home, and make sure she as well as her possible babies were taken care of. It was possible another rescue would pull her, but we told them if the other rescue didn't to keep us in mind. Our only thing holding us back was the distance. Vance County is about 2 1/2 hrs from Lexington, NC. We needed to have someone help transport her. Amy, nor any of her volunteers were able to travel the entire distance, so we had to find someone to help. Kerri put us in touch with Angie, the Shelter Coordinator. Angie was helping us try to arrange a transport for her. Angie had a volunteer, Pam, who could get her to Burlington, but had no one else that could pick up from there and bring her to Winston, so we could bring her home. Fast forward to Sunday, we tried to find someone to transport her from Burlington to Winston for us, but couldn't. We decided to write Angie back and inform her we would not be able to take Petunia. As much as we hated it, we had no transport for her. Angie wrote back and said the other shelter had already picked up the other dogs and had taken another in Petunia's place, with the hope and idea that we could save her. Which meant in the long run 1 extra dog would be saved. We wrote back and forth until 1:30am Monday morning. We could not figure out how to get her from Burlington to Winston. We had no one that could do it! Monday early morning brought about little sleep. The volunteers were back up and at it, doing anything and everything to get someone to transport Petunia that leg of the trip. We contacted other rescues, tranport people, etc. We begged and pleaded all day long! From about 8am until 7pm. We had no idea how to save her if we couldn't fill that leg of her journey up. We couldn't just let her die, but we were running out of options. We were writing and asking everyone we knew that might could help, in hopes we'd get a Yes! Desperation, love, compassion and a few other things make you use all your options. No matter how crazy or silly they maybe, what's the worst that could happen? We asked someone and they said, No? So we decided to look for anyone in the Burlington area who'd previously adopted dogs from us, that might could help. We wrote a few and didn't have much luck, until we got one much needed email back from Carol. She said she could help! We called her, spoke with her and finally....WE HAD SOMEONE!!! Carol offered her help, and said she'd be happy to do it. At this moment the 3 volunteers searching, breathed a sigh of relief, and immediately wrote Angie, then Kerri, to tell both of them the good news!! So plans were arranged and at 10:30pm Monday, September 5, we had it all figured out. Pam would pick Ms. Petunia up from the Shelter, drive her just over an hour to meet Carol in Burlington, Carol would drive her the 50 minutes to meet Bonnie (and her daughters Sarah & Sharon) in Winston-Salem, they would then make the 30 minute trip to take her home.
Tuesday morning came, and you guessed it, everything went off without a problem!! Praise the Lord! Petunia made it safe and sound. She was a bit timid and nervous, but settled in pretty quickly. Considering all she'd been through, she was an angel. Most of us would be exhausted after riding 2 1/2 hours, and then been put from one persons vehicle to another, all of this newness hitting at once. Petunia was a sweetheart and took it all in stride. On her last leg of her journey she got to stop by Chick-Fil-A and get some chicken. Once she got home, she was very ready to eat it!! Pictures will follow of her shortly.

I want to say a HUGE thanks to all involved!
First to Kerri for posting her.
Second to Angie for all she did and for finding Pam.
Third to Pam for volunteering to drive to Burlington.
Fourth to Carol for volunteering to drive to Winston.

Without all of you this would not be possible!!! Petunia was rescued on the day she was to be killed, and this would not have been possible without every single one of you. You are all angels to Petunia!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!
